Raining
Data Corporation Announces
Second-Quarter FY 2002 Results
- Continues
Improvements in EBITDA and Working Capital Over Prior Year
- Reports
Significant Reduction in Pro Forma Net Loss
IRVINE,
CA., November 14, 2001- Raining Data Corporation (Nasdaq: RDTA
) today announced financial results for the second quarter of
the Company's fiscal year 2002.
Revenue
for the second quarter ended September 30, 2001 totaled $5.0
million compared to $1.1 million for the second quarter ended
September 30, 2000. This revenue increase reflects the third
full quarter of combined operations following the acquisition
of PickAX, Inc., the holding company for Pick Systems, in December
2000.
Earnings
before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA)
was reduced to a loss of $373,000 for the quarter ended September
30, 2001 compared to an EBITDA loss of $1.1 million for the
quarter ended September 30, 2000. In addition, the EBITDA was
reduced 95% to a loss of $133,000 for the six month period ended
September 30, 2001 compared to an EBITDA loss of $2.7 million
for same six month period in the prior year.
"It
is important that the accounting for the acquisition of PickAX
not obscure the significant improvement in Raining Data's fundamentals,"
commented Carlton H. Baab, President and CEO. "After adjusting
for all the non-cash charges for depreciation, amortization
and debt discount items, the pro forma net loss for Raining
Data was reduced from $2,706,000 for the first six months of
last fiscal year which represented 131% of revenue for that
period to a pro forma loss of $963,000 for the first six months
of this fiscal year which represents only 9% of revenue for
that period. In addition, EBITDA significantly improved from
an EBITDA loss of 126% of revenue for the first six months of
last fiscal year to an EBITDA loss of 1% of revenue for the
first six months of this fiscal year."
"Moreover,
the working capital deficit was cut to a negative $3.9 million
at September 30, 2001 from a negative $6.4 million at March
31, 2001, the end of the last fiscal year. The $3.9 million
deficit includes $4.5 million in deferred revenue for our customer
support operation that will be earned over the coming year.
Thus, Raining Data really has an operating working capital surplus
for the first time in a long time."
Baab
continued, "All this was done in the face of a market that
we felt was going to be difficult long before the events of
September 11th. In July and August, we made significant changes
in Raining Data's cost structure in anticipation of a softening
market."
Baab
went on to say, "Our focus is on new product and technology
development. The reformulated product roadmap for the Company
was completed in early October and we have begun sharing that
roadmap with our major accounts with excellent response."
"Since
September 1st of this year, Raining Data has released D3
version 7.2.1 on AIX, on Linux, on ProPlus as well as Omnis
Studio 3.1, mvDesigner 1.1 and FlashCONNECT 3.0.1. In addition,
Raining Data has released into beta testing D3 version
7.2.1 on NT, D3 MQ Series Interface 1.0.1 on AIX,
D3 Oracle Gateway 1.6.1 on AIX, D3 OpenDB
1.7.1, and D3 ODBC Client 2.0.27," explained
Baab.
Baab
concluded by saying, "Probably the most exciting parts
of the roadmap come next year with our anticipated releases
of D3 8.0, mvEnterprise 5.0, mvBase 2.0, mvDesigner
2.0 and Omnis Studio 3.2, all of which include significant product
enhancements for our customers."
