Raining Data Announces ePedigree System and
RFID Data Management Server
New
Offerings Included As Part of Sun RFID Industry Solution
for Drug Authentication
IRVINE,
CA. - November 14, 2005 – Raining Data Corporation (NASDAQ:
RDTA), a leading data management software company that enables
real-time business, announced today its ePedigree System, ePharma
Application Suite and RFID Data Management Server. This comprehensive
new solution enables pharmaceutical companies to comply with
various state pedigree legislation, including Florida and California,
and to take advantage of current or future investments in RFID.
ePedigree
management enables pharmaceutical companies to create, send,
receive, authenticate, and digitally sign electronic pedigree
documents in compliance with state legislation. Electronic pedigrees
provide an additional measure in securing the pharmaceutical
supply chain by minimizing counterfeit product, reducing diversion
and improving product recall. ePedigrees are documents that
provide for a “chain of custody” in the pharmaceutical supply
chain that traces each drug's chain of ownership from the pharmacy
back to the manufacturer. Raining Data’s ePedigree System and
ePharma Application Suite provides a comprehensive platform
for managing pedigrees and complying with various state pedigree
legislation as well as the federal Prescription Drug Marketing
Act (PDMA) which are designed to eradicate counterfeit drugs
from the American drug supply chain.
RFID
Enables Item-Level Pedigrees That Are Linked to Individual Drugs
in the Supply Chain
By using proposed and existing RFID industry standards already
adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense, Wal-Mart, Procter
& Gamble, Gillette and other leading companies to streamline
their supply chains, Raining Data enables item-level ePedigrees
that are linked to the RFID tag on the drug as it travels through
the supply chain. This enhanced ePedigree provides an added
level of granularity and security to the pharmaceutical supply
chain which augments patient safety and offers additional opportunities
to contain costs. The Raining Data ePedigree System offers both
non-serialized pedigrees to enable regulatory compliance and
serialized pedigrees to streamline the supply chain and increase
patient safety.
Maximizing
Value of RFID and Reducing Cost Through Actionable Information
Raining Data RFID technologies bridge the physical world of
products, inventory, cases, pallets and containers with the
digital world of enterprise information systems to create a
highly efficient business operation. Mandates from large retailers
and the Department of Defense have driven most of the demand
for RFID technology over the last few years. Today, companies
are seeking opportunities for RFID to deliver cost savings by
leveraging the RFID technology in supply chain management activities
to improve asset management, inventory management, order reconciliation,
invoicing and payments. Achieving this return-on-investment
requires that RFID data be captured and aggregated from various
edge devices located across distributed facilities and then
integrated with business processes and enterprise IT systems.
The
Raining Data RFID Data Management Server enables the persistence,
query, and analysis of RFID data with advanced support to correlate
RFID events with business activities. The solution integrates
RFID data with back-office enterprise systems. Users of Raining
Data’s RFID Data Management Server may streamline operations
and create business value by enabling inventory and lead-time
visibility at each stage of the supply chain as well as asset
management and asset tracking throughout the enterprise. When
deployed together, Raining Data’s RFID Data Management Server
powered by TigerLogic XML Data Management Server and the Sun
Java System RFID Software provide a solution to capture RFID
edge events and integrate them with enterprise applications
for tasks such as order fulfillment and warehouse management.
Raining Data’s TigerLogic RFID Data Management Server works
with the Sun Java System RFID Software, Solaris 10 Operating
System (OS), Sun Java Integration Suite and Sun Java System
Application Server for an enterprise to gain maximum value from
a RFID deployment by enabling a rich set of tools to capture,
aggregate and persist RFID data. The RFID Data Management Server
can query, mine, analyze and integrate RFID data into business
operations for new levels of visibility and business intelligence.
ePedigree Fast Track Enables Compliance with Pedigree
Drug Laws and Regulatory Requirements plus Leverages RFID Investments
For the pharmaceutical industry, Raining Data’s ePedigree System
and ePharma Application Suite provide a fast track to ePedigree
legislation compliance as well as a long-term solution that
can evolve to support item-level pedigrees with RFID or other
mass serialization techniques.
Automating
the tracking of drugs through pedigree management improves drug
security and patient safety while reducing supply chain costs.
Companies using Raining Data solutions may increase supply chain
efficiency by ensuring that the right drugs are in the right
place at the right time providing patients with improved drug
availability. Additional benefits include reduced inventory
and labor costs plus less product loss due to expiration and
diversion, all of which may lower the cost and increase the
quality of pharmaceuticals for patients.
While the focus for many companies has been on meeting short-term
RFID and ePedigree compliance requirements at the lowest cost
possible, more visionary companies have recognized the long-term
benefits associated with RFID, such as enhanced patient safety,
risk mitigation, improved supply chain efficiencies, increased
inventory visibility in logistics operations and reduced errors.
Sun Microsystems has chosen to include Raining Data’s technologies
into the Sun RFID Industry Solution for Drug Authentication
to offer pharmaceutical customers a comprehensive, supply chain
wide solution for drug authentication using RFID.
“Raining Data was chosen by Sun Microsystems because of their
foundation in distributed data management, expertise with ePedigree
and their integration support of various Sun technologies including
our Java System RFID Software, Java Integration Suite and Solaris
10 OS,” said Vivek Khandelwal, Principal RFID Solutions Manager
for Sun Microsystems.
Raining Data’s RFID Data Management and ePedigree solutions
are non-intrusive, enabling fast compliance with Florida and
other state pedigree laws, while providing a technology foundation
that can scale to leverage current or future business requirements,
such as item-level pedigree, anti-counterfeiting, track &
trace and returns processing.
“Raining Data has enabled us to combine ePedigree requirements
and RFID data to quickly offer a comprehensive solution that
helps the pharmaceutical industry to address the growing problem
with counterfeited drugs in the US supply chain,” said Liz From,
Pharma/Healthcare RFID Lead for Sun Microsystems.
The
RFID Data Management Solution working with the Sun Java System
RFID Software and Java Integration Suite, incorporates RFID
event data into business processes and provide business context
to aid decision making across the supply chain. Raining Data’s
RFID Data Management Server supports the EPC Global Application
Level Event (ALE) specifications, the emerging EPC Information
Service (EPC-IS) standard by providing real-time capture, query,
analysis and integration of RFID event data. The solution also
supports integration with leading RFID readers and printers,
is fast and easy to deploy and enables centralized configuration
and management of devices.
“While RFID tagging increases the granularity and amount of
supply chain data, true benefits are achieved only when the
data is managed and integrated in a way so that it is actionable
and enables improved decision-making. Raining Data’s RFID Data
Management Server and ePedigree System provides a scalable,
standards-based architecture to facilitate ePedigree legislation
compliance and the actionable use of RFID information by integrating
and correlating the data with existing enterprise systems such
as ERP and Warehouse Management to provide long-term supply
chain benefits and increase patient safety,” said Ajay Ramachandran,
Vice President, CTO & General Manager - Enterprise Applications
Group, Raining Data Corporation.
