mv·TERM
on Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
One
of the main features of release 1.3 is the replacement of the
legacy Microsoft NetDDE network protocol with a newer Windows
Sockets based protocol for remote clients. However, this new
sockets-based functionality cannot be extended to clients using
Windows for Workgroups (WFWG).
In
order for mvBase clients on a WFWG system to connect to an mvBase
1.3 server, the DdeGateway application (aka DdeAgent) provided
with release 1.3 must be running on the same system as the mvBase
server. Note that it can only be run as a Windows application
and not as a Windows service, even on Windows NT.
The
DdeGateway is solely intended to assist in the transition between
mvBase 1.2 and mvBase 1.3 since it allows the upgrading of mvBase
1.2 clients spread across a network to take place in a phased
manner.
The
DdeGateway is installed when the mvBase server is installed
and can be run from START | Programs | mvBase 1.3 | DdeAgent.
The
client executables for WFWG can be installed by using the new
Installshield-based mvBase 1.3 Installation utility. When this
is run on a WFWG system, it will only allow mv·TERM and
the associated Help files to be installed.
Additionally,
the client executables for WFWG can be found in the Support
directory on the CD-ROM.
